person to debate joe biden over the last five years. >> steve: we continue the conversation on twitter. >> gretchen: have a great weekend. >> steve: see you monday. good morning, everybody. welcome to friday because the vp nominees went to a to toe for 90 minutes man did they come ready to rumble. vice president joe biden looking to reverse his campaign's downward slide. republican nominee paul ryan trying to build on team romney's momentum. that is how it started last night. this morning we end. i'm bill hemmer. welcome to friday edition of "america's newsroom." martha is out. >> i'm jamie colby out for martha they provided points and issues on zingers and economy and debate decorum. >> mr. vice president, i know you're under a lot of duress to make up for lost ground but i think people would be better served if we don't keep interrupting each other. >> with regard to social security, we will not, we will not privatize it. if we listened to governor romney and congressman during the bush years, man where all those seniors would be now if there money had been in the market. their ideas
joe biden's bizarre, strange, weird behavior in last night's showdown. former vice-president dick cheney is here for a "hannity" exclusive interview. >> we weren't told they wanted more security. we did not know they wanted more security. >> sean: tonight, we fact check joe biden. the results are downright embarrassing. how will the obama mania media spin the performances. find out in our weekly segment of media mash. more shocking comments out of the white house over the benghazi coverup. the entire reason that this has become the -- you know, political topic it is is because of mitt romney and paul ryan. >> sean: we are just 25 days from the election. "hannity" starts right here, right now. tonight, the former vice-president of the united states, dick cheney is giving us his exclusive reaction to the debate. first, a recap of the faceoff between crazy uncle joe biden and congressman paul ryan. without question, the headline was biden's downright bizarre, strange, bewildering behavior. for nearly 90 minutes he was either uncontrollably laughing or rudely interrupting his opponent
off of his debate performance last week. i think that what joe biden needs to do is blunt that momentum with a sort of a draw or a perceived victory. i think if he loses the debate in the same way that barack obama lost the debate to mitt romney, we'll see the momentum on the republican side pick up. i would say more broadly, andrea, i don't think people usually make their decisions particularly undecided at this point, they don't make their decision on who the vice president is or how they perform in a debate but they do make their decision on the narrative, momentum, what the race looks and feels like and the vice presidential debate as well as the two vice presidential candidates have a patrol play in that narrative. >> and speaking of the state of the race, we've got latest polling today. came out overnight, the nbc news/"wall street journal"/marist polls, talking about ohio, florida and virginia. chuck, going through these numbers, you see that the race has narrowed, ohio still in edge for the president. >> it is. it's funny, one way to look at it you can say this rac
respect to be president of the united states. i think he did what he had to do. i think joe biden did what he had to do. he went out and, you know, delivered the obama message in the way that i'm sure team obama wished that president had the week earlier. and i think you're right, he gave a little bit of a road map about what the president is going to do when he comes out next week. >> that was definitely a front-loaded assault, saw the ding ding ding. one point it was like what's he going to say for the next hour and a half, he said it all there. karen, i thought one of the more -- where he might have drawn blood as far as if biden actually drew blood on romney was his comments around abortion. >> yeah. >> and reminding people something that has not been discussed almost at all in this election cycle which is the supreme court decisions that may be made by the next president. take a listen to what biden said on abortion. >> the next president will get one or two supreme court nominees. that's how close roe v. wade is. >> and we know romney camp is worried about women. they've seen -- >> a
presidential debate i think was really shortchanging the issue. that said, if paul -- sorry, if joe biden drew blood last night, i thought it was on this issue in particular. this ask not an issue of contraception coverage. these aren't nuanced positions on, you know, the catholic church and reproduction. this is fundamentally the question of whether women have the right to choose, and paul ryan could not answer the question, and to many, many women from both sides of the aisle, this is something that you vote on. i mean, this is not a subtle sort of tax policy nuance. this is about having the choice to have an abortion and the dialogue that goes on between a woman and her doctor. and it was clear that the romney/ryan ticket is in a place that the obama/biden ticket is not. >> well, you made a point that i like to make. we can argue about a lot of issues as i said. there were a lot of issues debated last night like benghazi which are vitally important but not exactly a voting issue. a voting issue is an issue like gun rights to some people who are hunters or sportsmen. they will vote on that i
him or not, vice president joe biden is the guy who's got everybody talking. democrats are claiming victory for biden who was feisty and fired up. republicans say his mannerisms were strange. touching off the debate about the debate. >> everybody thought it was a home run. what you saw was the passionate joe biden. i don't think he was over the top. i thought what you saw was joe biden's passion for these issues. he cares deeply about them. he speaks from the heart. that's what you got last night. >> when joe biden continued to interrupt paul and continued to get in his face, i think people were sort of questioning, okay, stop it for a second. let me hear what you're going to do differently, mr. vice president. >> i can't recall a time, frankly, in modern history, where the challenger for the vice president to the vice president bested the vice president in a debate. >> biden came out swinging, even interrupting several times to make his point. >> when we look weak, our adversaries are more willing to test us, they are more brazen in our attacks. >> with all due respect, that is a b
night. foe joe biden and paul ryan, tonight's the night. the one and only vice presidential debate at the 2012 campaign season. we'll spend much of this hour on the race, the impact such as it is for second banana's. cnn's john king is counting down to the big event from his post in washington, d.c. dana bash join us. john, you write that the vice president debate "no game changer but could shift momentum." how joe. >> reporter: look what happened since the first presidential debate. governor romney has momentum. moved ahead of the president by a smidgen in the national polls. caught up or gained ground in several key battleground states, ohio, virginia, florida, colorado, and a built of a breeze at his back and republicans think they have momentum. in this debate, americans pick presidents, not vice-presidents. not to downplay the stakes, but the presidential debates are more important. if joe biden can turn a strong performance maybe halt the republican momentum. if paul ryan can, republicans keep the momentum going into next week. >> john, playing sound bites leading into a lot

. round one. the only round, actually, here. joe biden, paul ryan. both have arrived in danville, kentucky, to battle tonight in debate. and the vice president landed just about within the past hour or so. that's his daughter there on his left. by his side, ashley and hunter and bo got officer two, as well. paul ryan flew in to town yesterday for the debate that begins in less than seven hours. keep in mind that is 9:00 eastern time. we have jim acosta on the ground in danville. i want to start with brianna keilar, white house correspondent, in kentucky for us, as well, right now. let's start with the exclusive pictures. the picture you have sort of behind the scenes and see is that the replica of the debate set and seeing joe biden? >> reporter: it's very similar to the debate set that we'll see tonight during the debate here in danville, kentucky. the pictures you are looking at, actually, though are of what's really a second floor ballroom in the wilmington, delaware, shert sherton. you can see how much the biden team tried to duplicate the tea here. >> here we go. >>. >> reporter: the
. watch out, uncle joe. actually, "time" magazine released these photos today showing congressman ryan pumping iron last december, not exactly the images he wants out the night before he needs to prove that he's ready to be a heartbeat away from the presidency. ryan's workout routine probably won't come up tonight but his macho vision for the country will and it should. ryan and romney are pushing a radical remaking of the social contract that americans have relied on for many decades. it's a investigation that includes a budget where 62% of the cuts come from the poor. cuts to medicaid, cuts to food stamps, pell grants, all while cuts to the defense department and oil industry continue as usual. ryan will have to defend that record tonight and he'll have to defend comments like these. >> before too long we could become a society that we were never, ever intended to be. we could become a society where the majority of americans are makers, not takers. they believe the american idea. only 30% want the welfare state. >> takers and makers. it's a distorted view of the american people and a
's performance last week and then joe biden's this? maybe it picked up a little bit they think with joe biden. >> i think there's a sense of relief that biden did what he need to do in his debate on paul ryan on thursday night of course. that was give the red meat to the base, satisfy their appetite, get after paul ryan, get after the republicans, be more aggressive, fight back against what the republicans put forward that isn't necessarily true that doesn't jibe with the realities of what's happening around the world and around this country and especially in the economy. the president has said he was too polite. advisers intimate he's going to be more aggressive obviously. but still, joe biden is joe biden. he's the regular guy. joe six-pack from scranton. president obama, that's not his persona. having said all that, i think it's a fair assumption we're going to see a much more aggressive president obama on tuesday night. >> okay. mike. as always many thanks. we're getting an update on what the gop candidates are doing today in just a minute. >>> first president obama may be reaching out to
following polling numbers leaning toward the republican ticket. president obama at 51, joe biden at 44%. whatever the numbers, paul ryan says he is ready to go later tonight. >> what i'm excited about is we get to offer the american people a very clear choice. joe biden has been on the stage before. he has been on the big stages. it is my first time. what he can't run from president obama's indefensible record. they're offering more of the same. i'm excited because we have a chance to offer the country very clear choice. let's get some ice cream. bill: bret baier, anchor of "special report", co-host of tonight's debate coverage live. morning to you in danville. i didn't think paul ryan ate ice cream but that is beside the point. who has the highest hurdle to clear tonight, biden or ryan? >> it might be yogurt. we're not sure. good morning. it might be joe biden. it might be because democrats really have expectation that joe biden will go on the offensive to make up what they see perhaps as a lackluster performance by president obama in the first debate. they look back to 2008 and numbe
president joe biden could stop all the democrats hand wringing or paul ryan could help continue the momentum for republicans. yesterday congressman ryan appeared confident at a stop for ice cream in st. petersburg. >> what's joe biden's greatest weakness for tomorrow night? >> barack obama's record. joe biden has been on these big stages. it's my first time. but what he can't run from is president obama's record. they're just offering more of the same. >> if president obama is sweating tonight's debate, he's not showing it. >> i think joe just needs to be joe. congressman ryan is a smart and effective speaker. but his ideas are the wrong ones. >> mitt romney's debate performance last week re-energized his campaign, but our brand new swing state polls show it didn't change a lot of minds. 92% of voters in ohio and florida made up their minds before the debate. 91% in virginia. overall, the dial did move slightly in romney's favor in florida and virginia, the race is virtually tied. but president obama leads ohio by six points in the nbc news "wall street journal" maris poll. joining me to tal

and joe biden. connell: we have rich edson down there in danville. we are getting ready. rich: there is some thought down here. you have heard this. vice presidential debate do not really matter. you never have had a situation like this where a vice presidential candidate, chairman paul ryan, is the author of the national economic plan. so think the democrats have been running against. this is something for paul ryan to defend tonight. some of the democrats want to attack that. democrats want a bit of a redo from last week. this is their chance to get their footing back and stop the republican momentum. when you hear the candidates talk, of course, it is all about lowering expectations. >> serve. it is a nervous situation because joe biden is one of the most extreme debaters in modern politics. rich: ryan has been practicing with ted olson playing the role of joe biden. olson told fox they had nine sessions of 90 minutes each. biden has also been practicing and delaware. he leaves here shortly. should be in danville, kentucky, sometime around 1:00 o'clock this afternoon. paul

if joe biden can turn in a good performance on thursday. >> let's take a look at this, mr. mayor. go ahead, did you want to say something? >> go ahead. >> you can't refight the last fight. last wednesday was last wednesday. we can't debate the debate. let's move on. we have one this week. we have 30 days to go. you know, every day is not a spectacular day for any one of us in these professions that we have. president obama is the same president he was last tuesday, last wednesday, last thursday. moving this country forward, getting people back to work, focused on issues both domestically as well as our international partners around the world. i mean, the speech today by mitt romney about foreign policy was a joke. it has been already panned by so many who actually know what they're talking about. this is the same guy who couldn't even go to the olympics in london and do that right insulting our good friends and our great partner in the uk. so let's talk about the substance of what it takes to run the united states of america, the most powerful country in the world, and not about, you
for it here out of that first debate for their ticket, what do you tell him? >> i'd say to joe biden, be yourself, because biden has a unique way of bringing reality into these very substantive conversations. and i'll use big bird as an example, and we're sort of making a joke, and yes, it gives people laughter, but there's something very serious about this issue. i mean, the "sesame street" programming, pbs programming has been in -- i worked in education for a number of years -- the gold standard, not just here in the united states, around the world, recognized as a gold standard in children's education. at a time when kids in our country, not enough of them can actually read proficiently, what sense does it make to cut? i mean, we're not going to balance that $5 trillion hole by getting rid of big bird. that's what i think part of reminding people about big bird does, how ridiculous the rhetoric from the romney/ryan campaign is, but also the idea that, so, you're going to cut something that we know is effective and works and helps our kids prepare for the future, but you're going
